Project Community Care: Without it, 'we wouldn't have our schools ready'

PORTLAND, Ore. - It's no secret that Oregon is beautiful. On Saturday thousands of Oregonians did their part to make sure it stays that way.

Students, staff and community members from local schools are spending the weekend fixing up school campuses. Seventy-eight schools from throughout the city - including this one in North Portland - are being represented by 7,000 volunteers.

On Saturday those volunteers painted, landscaped, cleaned and much more - all in hopes of making this school year memorable to students.

"School districts are facing major budget cuts," said organizer Andre Jackson, "and without the support and assistance of our community, we wouldn't have our schools ready for students to return from summer break."

Other members of the community helped in the clean up, including students from the University of Portland and PGE.

This is the 10th year that "Project Community Care" has helped spruce up Portland schools.
