Police need help to ID 'Oxy Bandit'

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Police Bureau, in cooperation with Crime Stoppers, is asking for the public's help in identifying the "Oxy Bandit", a robbery suspect.

At approximately 1:18 p.m. Feb. 21, a southwest Portland Safeway Pharmacy (8145 Southwest Barbur Boulevard), was robbed by a lone male. The suspect entered the store and stole Oxycontin from the pharmacy before fleeing the scene.

Within the past month, this same suspect has robbed several locations within the Portland-metro area and police need the public's help to find him.

The "Oxy Bandit" is a white male, in his 50s, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 and between 190-210 pounds. He has graying hair, a gray stubby beard and was wearing a red and black baseball cap. He has also been seen wearing a white baseball cap and glasses.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information, reported to Crime Stoppers, that leads to an arrest in this case, or any unsolved felony, and you remain anonymous.

Sign up now for glaucoma screenings

Devers Eye Institute at Legacy Health will conduct free visual field screenings in January as part of National Glaucoma Awareness Month.

The screenings will test for glaucoma and other serious diseases of the eye. The process is painless and takes only a few minutes to complete.

"Although there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection leads to earlier treatment which can significantly delay or stop further visual loss," said Dr. Jack Cioffi, Chenoweth Chair of Ophthalmology at Legacy Good Samaritan Devers Eye Institute. "We strongly urge anyone interested and especially those in high-risk groups such as African-Americans, Hispanics, Native-Americans, Asians, people older than 60 and people with diabetes, to take advantage of this free screening service."

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. More than 2.25 million people over the age of 45 have glaucoma and half of these are undiagnosed.

Schedule for Free Eye Screenings:

Locally owned gym opens; to give corporate chains a "run" for their money

Too much unnecessary stress. Pure and simple, that is the main reason Kate Fishcher (along with her business partner, Bill Amadon) recently opened up the Edge Performance Fitness gym located at 1502 N. Ainsworth.

"Personally, I've never been a member of the large corporate gyms, but after talking to other people who have been, it bothered me that there was so much stress involved with being a member, such as sign up fees and yearly contracts", said Fischer.

Multnomah County: No public H1N1 clinics for the next few weeks

Multnomah County will not have anymore public clinics until after Nov. 18. They say the vaccine they have now is being distributed through clinics and WIC to get to low-income pregnant women and children.

However, there are 47,000 doses coming to our area this week and Multnomah's share of that will also be distributed through private clinics, so patients can check with their doctors to see if they can get a vaccination.
