Midge Purcell to lead "State of Black Oregon" discussion

PORTLAND, Ore. - Midge Purcell, from Urban League of Portland, will discuss the "State of Black Oregon" report, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, March 15.

AME Zion Church, at 4340 N. Vancouver Ave., will host the discussion.

The Restorative Listening Project is co-sponsoring the discussion, which is free and open to the public.

The Restorative Listening Project's mission statement is "based on the principles of Restorative Justice which says that only when those most impacted are heard, acknowledged and efforts have been made to repair the harm can the community be made whole again," according to its Web site.

America's Largest Antique & Collectible Show comes to the Expo Center

Admission: General admission is $7, teens 12 to 17 years old are $3 and kids 11 and under are free.

Parking: $7 per space without in and out privileges. Carpools of three or more will be $6. CASH ONLY

University of Portland's Hawaii Club holding its 34th annual luau

What: This popular event is filled with food, dance and celebration and this year’s theme is "E Ho'omau," which means to continue and to pass on. The event allows students from Hawaii to share their Polynesian culture and traditions with the University and greater Portland communities.

When: Saturday, March 20. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a traditional Hawaiian dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Show starts at 7 p.m. and will feature live music, hula and traditional Polynesian dances performed by students, as well as fire-knife dancing.

Where: Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd.

Haiti benefit concert Saturday

NORTH PORTLAND - Everyone is invited to join the benefit concert "Hearts For Haiti" Saturday at Columbia Crossings, 12050 N. Jantzen Drive, from 3 p.m. to midnight.

The event is presented by Dirty Dirty Street Records "and Friends." All proceeds benefit Partners In Health, a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in Haiti to bring modern medical care to poor communities in 12 countries around the world.

"Hearts For Haiti is an opportunity for Portland to show its support for the people of Haiti, raise some funds for this fantastic organization and have a good time all wrapped in one," according to the event notification on Facebook. "Please join us in this important event."

'Northwest Poker Showdown' returns

The NW Celebrity Poker Showdown is a professionally run non-profit charity tournament to benefit Pop Warner Football and Cheer. It's being held May 8 at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion.

Pancakes! Come and get 'em!

In honor of "Fat Tuesday" or as its commonly known in the United Kingdom, Pancake Day, the Peace Lutheran and Bethel Lutheran churches will be holding a pancake feed from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 16. The dinner is to be held at Peace Lutheran Church located at 2201 N Rosa Parks Way.

Proceeds from the pancake feed will go to support the Good Samaritan Food Bank.

In addition to enjoying regular as well as potatoe pancakes, diners will be entertained by the sounds of Nopo Mojo in addition to the fun activity of making Mardi Gras masks.

'Paint it Forward' to support local students

Paint it Forward, now in its second year of bringing art to local area students, is an annual event held at Sitton Elementary school.This years event will be February 25 and will essentially turn the Sitton Elementary gym into a gallery of amazing art.

Organizers are holding a pre-event fundraiser at McTarnahan’s Tap Room, located at 2730 Northwest 31st Avenue, on February 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Attendees can buy dinner tickets to this event at the door for $20, or dine off the menu and make a donation in person. The ticket price includes a quarter roasted chicken or pork loin dinner and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages.  Half the proceeds of each ticket sold will go directly to help fund the Paint it Forward event on Feb. 25.

Paint It Forward was started two years ago and is dedicated to transforming the Sitton Elementry into a gallery of beautiful art pieces.
