Early tests come in on the air quality at Harriet Tubman

We're getting our first information about the quality of air at one of Portland's middle schools.

A few weeks ago, the EPA tested the air quality of dozens of schools nationwide and one of them was Harriet Tubman in north Portland where they found evidence of three toxins.

While all the data has not been analyzed yet, early sampling shows the levels of air toxins are below the levels of short-term concern.

The results are now being evaluated for potential health concerns from long-term exposure.

Tips on protecting your home from Old Man Winter

The following tips are from the NW Insurance Council:

Freezing temperatures, ice, snow and wind can devastate homes and businesses if they are not properly winterized.  Winter storms are the third-largest cause of property loss in America, resulting in about $1.2 billion in insured losses annually, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Winter weather-related losses such as burst pipes, wind damage, ice dams, frozen gutters and damage caused by the weight of ice or snow are covered under standard Homeowners Insurance policies.  Damage caused by flooding is specifically excluded under standard home and business insurance policies.
By winterizing your home or business you also can eliminate many inconveniences caused by weather-related losses.

Holiday hiring - will you even have a shot?

If you want to get work over the holidays, now is the time to start looking because this is when the big stores are hiring holiday help.

The good news is that even with the bad economy, big stores in the Portland area are planning to hire holiday workers this year, although not as many as usual.  And that means job seekers will have to try to stand out above the rest.

Target is one of the businesses looking for seasonal workers and they are hiring now.

Also, experts say to try the discount chain stores because that is where people will be spending their holiday money this year and that is where workers will be needed.

Here are what experts say you should to do get that holiday job:

Los Angeles--

UPDATE

Really annoyed the stadium announcer keeps pronouncing Jacquizz Rodgers' name as "juh-KEEZ."He began the game by talking about Lyle"MOH-voh."

The USC pre-game radio broadcasters and the university's own athletic director had more respect, recognizing the talents of the Rodgers brothers and how difficult they are to tackle.

Capacity of the LA Memorial Coliseum: 93,607 (which means it's really loud when the Trojans get it going).

Those on priority list will get H1N1 vaccines this time

When pregnant women, parents with young children or those with pre-existing conditions show up at a free H1N1 vaccine clinic in north Portland on Saturday, will they be competing against adults who are not on the priority list?

On Thursday, that's exactly what happened when the Multnomah County Health Department held a swine flu vaccine clinic in northeast Portland. An estimated 1,200 people showed up for 400 doses and people who did not meet priority criteria were not pulled out of line. Instead, it was first-come, first-served.

Multnomah County health officials said it was their first go-around and they learned they need to have screeners at future clinics.  Which means people who are not in high-risk groups will be turned away once the doses run out.  Pregnant women and children under 5 years old are encouraged to get the vaccine.

There are very few clinics in our entire region.  The one referenced here is being held Saturday, Oct.

Mayor brings back limited leaf depot service

The city had eliminated its leaf depot program due to budget cuts, but the mayor is bringing back limited service to help folks out this year.

In North Portland, there will be a leaf depot at Stanton Yard (2929 N. Kerby, west of Emanuel Hospital) on Saturday, Nov. 21.  The hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fees are $5 per car load, $10 per truck, SUV or trailer load and $20 per truck and trailer (5 cubic yard maximum). No commercial loads allowed. Only leaves will be accepted.

The city will also be going around to certain neighborhoods for street leaf removal. View the schedule.

Here's the official announcement from the mayor:

Mayor Sam Adams announced today that the Bureau of Transportation is re-instituting some leaf depots this year, rather than eliminating the service entirely.
