Never mind, Adams says of bridge idea

PORTLAND, Ore. - Mayor Sam Adams is backing off last week's announcement that he wants to look at building a much smaller bridge across the Columbia River.

Adams had stated that he wanted to allow city engineers to study a vastly smaller new Interstate Bridge with eight, maybe even just six, lanes but he is now suspending that request.

Last month, Adams and Vancouver's new mayor, Tim Leavitt, called the idea of a 10- to 12-lane bridge unacceptable.

Drive, drop and donate

Studies show that kids function better in school when they're not hungry but not all parents can afford to send their kids to school with snacks.

That's where the Portland Schools Foundation, an independent, community-based organization, comes in.

They have partnered with Safeway and are asking people to donate healthy, non-perishable snacks (like dried fruits and raisins, nuts, trail mix, granola bars, baked chips and multi-grain crackers) to help out.
